Living in the Covid-19 era is stressful. Now\nthat we have doubled the time in our homes, our exposure to chemicals in the\nair of toxic homes maybe affecting our health in a variety of ways. Chlordane\nand heptachlor found in the air of an estimated 30 million homes in the United\nStates are known to cause upper respiratory affects (bronchitis, sinusitis, and\nasthma) at relatively low levels and anxiety at moderate indoor air levels, and\ndepression at higher levels.  Even though\nthese organochlorine insecticides were banned in United States in 1988, current\nlevels in homes can range from Minimal Risk Level (MRL) (20 nanograms\/cubic\nmeter) to 200 times this levels) www.toxfree.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The range of symptoms and disease outcomes is\nunique for the Covid-19 infection from asymptomatic to death.  The death rate for Covid-19 parallels that of\nsevere trauma with women having better outcomes than men and both sexes dying\nat an increased rate with age. Sex steroids in particular and steroids in\ngeneral decrease with age. Sex steroids (estrogen and progesterone) reduce\nnitic oxide production by Isolated human white blood cells activated with an\ninflammatory cytokine mixture (tumor necrosis factor <\/a>alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and\ninterferon gamma) (1). These\ninflammatory cytokines have been reported to be at high levels in Covid-19\npatients (2).  Nitric oxide is a\nlipophilic oxidant able to transverse cell membranes and damage surrounding\ncells (3). This pulmonary damage is observed in Covid-19 patients during the\nCytokine Storm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heptachlor, at levels found in human serum, has\nbeen shown to bind to the estrogen receptor on isolated human white blood cells\nand induce the production of nitric oxide. If TNF\u03b1, at concentrations found in inflammation, is added with heptachlor-\ntreated white blood cells, nitric oxide production dramatically increases (3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chemicals that have pro-oxidant effects or interfere\nwith the dampening effects of steroids on the immune system would lead to an\nover activation of the immune response to Covid-19, resulting in the Cytokine Storm\nand consequently to a higher death rate.  Burn patients with higher levels of chlordane\nand heptachlor in their blood were shown to die at a significantly higher rate\ncompared aged-, sex-, and degree of burn patients with lower levels of\nchlordane and heptachlor (4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
