In houses with basements, chlordane was applied to the earth before construction or pumped through drill holes under the floor and in or behind the walls, allowing the vapors to enter through cracks or beside pipes. In houses with slabs, chlordane was applied to the earth before pouring the slab.

Over 30 million homes in the United States were treated for termites with chlordane / heptachlor or aldrin / dieldrin before these insecticides were banned. Occupants of chlordane-contaminated homes are exposed to chlordane and related insecticides by breathing the vapors in the air of their homes. The US Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (under the Center for Disease Control) have published the concentrations in indoor air that increases the risk of various cancers and diseases, respectively. Air concentrations of chlordane and related insecticides can only be determined accurately using a sampling pump and specific sampling tubes. Testing the dust on the air filters of furnaces, or the samples derived from wiping the surfaces inside the home, or soil samples from around or under the home will not determine the levels of chlordane and related insecticides in the air of your home, and therefore, these tests are of little, if any, value. By ordering a sampling kit you can sample the air of your home in 100 minutes. No other laboratory provides you with the scientific equipment needed to test the air in your home, a saving of $200 - $400. The cost for the sampling kit; highly sensitive, accurate gas chromatographic analysis with electron capture detection; and unlimited consulting is $199 for first sample and $99 for additional samples. If you are buying a house built before 1990 and live in a termite-infested area , or if your family is experiencing symptoms of upper respiratory infections, headaches, anxiety, or depression or diseases ( diabetes , neurological disorders, chemical sensitivity, breast cancers ) then consider taking preventive steps to ensure or improve the health of your family (see Television , Radio , and Newspaper accounts of health effects of chlordane on families). Many of the symptoms / diseases have medical codes ICD-10 T60.1 and ICD-9 293.83. Testing for exposure may be cover in Method Code L23.5 - 82486.

Dr. Cassidy has been studying the health effects of chlordane for 20 years ( publications ) and has provided accurate, sensitive air tests for 14 years to hundreds of clients buying homes or living in contaminated homes. Depending on where and how these insecticides were applied, current indoor air levels can vary 300-fold with levels up to 200-fold over the Minimal Risk Factor (graphs of client samples in the last 4 years ( Levels ) and ( Risks )).
